916 Ink
Promoting Community Voices
916 Ink is Sacramento’s arts-based creative writing and literacy nonprofit that provides workshops and tutoring to transform Sacramento youth into strong readers, confident communicators, and published authors. Our programs increase literacy skills, improve vocabulary, teach empathy, positively impact social and emotional learning, and expand communication skills. We envision a Sacramento region where every child and teen is given access to a culturally relevant creative writing program that leads them to believe in themselves and to understand the power of the written word. 916 Ink's mission is to empower youth through creative writing.
Project Description
916 Ink will support four Master Artist Fellows in creating a multi-modal, full-color, illustrated anthology styled as an oversized coffee table book, showcasing Sacramento's diverse voices. Fellows and Staff Artists will collaborate with local artists to develop submissions highlighting community-centered themes, allowing local writers, artists, and storytellers to present original creative writing in text or multi-modal formats that reflect Sacramento's unique experiences.
The project includes workshops and focus groups to engage a generationally diverse group of writers and content creators in a collaborative design process. Additionally, middle and high school students can submit work for a chance to receive a scholarship stipend and be published alongside professional artists. 916 Ink will leverage its publishing and community engagement relationships to solicit submissions, involve artists, incorporate feedback, and widely distribute the final publication throughout Sacramento.
