Sugar Skull Art Walk
The Sugar Skull Art Walk places Latinx/Indigenous art on Main Street in Placerville to bridge cultural and racial divides.
Project Description
The Sugar Skull Art Walk (SSAW) aims to connect people from different cultural and language backgrounds to reduce segregation and racism in Placerville. By engaging Latinx/Indigenous communities in creative work on Main Street, the campaign aims to break down barriers and foster shared human experiences through ofrendas and folk-art traditions honoring deceased loved ones. This experience of loss can transcend racism, promoting unity among diverse community members and normalizing Latinx/Indigenous culture in the area.
SSAW will hold an informational meeting and potluck with stakeholders to align on the project's vision. The campaign will involve the community designing ofrendas, deciding on outreach strategies, and coordinating activities through regular potluck meetings. Publicity efforts will include artist-designed flyers, QR codes for cultural information, and outreach to local media. Multiple ofrendas will be displayed around town during the October event, with thematic activities and educational outreach. After the event, collaborators will evaluate and plan for the following year to ensure lasting impact and continued community engagement.
